Year 3 Writers

This week a group of talented Year 3 writers are working together exploring their ideas about colour.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge says that "Poetry is the best words in the best order".

We tried to write free verse and to make sure our words made a picture in the reader's mind. We tried not to use too many words that weren't necessary.

Here are our poems.

Blue is sapphires and rain,
The sea is as blue as the sky.
Rivers and lakes, sharks prey.
Waterfalls splash,
To the beat of the waves.
The sky becomes lighter by the rise of dawn.
Finding sapphires in dark mines.
Oceans full of animals by Zeus’ delight.
Midnight’s here and we fall asleep.

Blue,
A beautiful, aquamarine sky.
The colour of my uniform,
Covering me
Everyday.
The sea and sky of the
New Zealand flag.
The colour of my writing.
Blueberry pie and sapphires.
Blue moons,lighting my way
At night
Dark blue denim
Protecting me in the weekend.
Blue makes me feel happy.

Red makes is hot fire, hearts beating,
Traffic lights glowing.
Pink marshmallows
That melt in your mouth.
I see colour when I wake.
Blue skies make me smile.
Bubble mixture is so colourful.

With energy and excitement

Colours like bursting paint
Running all around.
Shades of red jump into fire.
Tinges of blue melt into water.
Colour trickles down slim ledges,
To make coloured slides.
Colour is everywhere.
Look around!

Racing across sky into water
Making rainbows.
Colours bouncing onto puddles,
Splashing with a ting tang
Onto someone’s foot.
A bubble floats around water,
Exploding into paint.
Bubbles shine making glowing sparks,
Shooting across the concrete
Silently striking
Anything in the way.

Black the colour of mischief
Red has shades of feelings.

My school uniform is blue.

Any school’s house colour.

The world without colour?
Boring, just shades of
Nothing.

Orange fireworks shoot into the air
An orange trail left behind.
Orange flames bursting
Onto the ground the colour of the sun.
Amazing goldfish
Circling around
And around.
A carrot nibbled by a hungry rabbit.
Tigers camouflaged behind dry grass.
Daffodil centres as bright
As the fur of a tiger
Orange hair swishes
In the air.
Orange petals fly all day
And night.
I see coral under the sea
It’s as hard as rock.
Monarch butterflies racing
Orange across the world.

Year 1 and 2 Science Extra

Our school focus this term is 'Kaboom' and this week is National Science Week.

We have started off the term thinking about science and the Year 1 and 2 children worked on a great milk experiment with Mrs Howison and Mrs Ward.

We started off thinking and brainstorming our ideas about milk.

From Year 1 and 2 Science

We knew lots of interesting things and that helped us when we started our experiment.
We had to Predict and Explain and then Observe and Explain.

We had dishes of milk with three drops of food colouring in them. We then touched the milk with a cotton bud that was wet with detergent. We had to guess what we thought might happen first.





It was amazing, the colours all zoomed to the side of the dish and started swirling around. We drew or wrote about what happened and then tried to explain why.

At the end we talked about it and discovered that detergent as tiny parts (molecules) that don't like water. They connect to the fat in the milk and try to get away from the water. This is how the detergent get that dirt and fat off dishes. The food colouring lets us see what is happening in the dish.

It was great fun, we love science!

St Albans Values Voicethread

Our Values Work

We worked together for a few days exploring the values and what they mean to us.

First we used Y charts to brainstorm what we thought each value looked like, felt like and sounded like. We used this thinking to create pictures for each value in kidpix.
Next we created slogans for the values and voted on each others ideas. We had votes to use. We could use these votes any way we wanted. We could give one idea 8 votes or 8 ideas one vote each. It was fun.
We then put our thinking together in different ways to share with the school. One group created a survey which is below, another group made an imovie, one group made a voice thread (that was tricky) and the last group made a key note presentation.

Survey about the values

Who or What am I?

A group of gorgeous young writers have been working on some writing to share.

We looked at other author's examples of 'who am I' clues and then tried to write our own. We tried to trick our readers into thinking our who am I was in fact something else.

When we had finished our writing we put our work into keynote which is like powerpoint. We then cut our pictures into pieces to go with our clues. We added transitions to make things zoom in and out of our movie.

When we finished the teachers made them into movies.

They look very good and we are feeling proud of our work.

Movies about St Albans School

Some children from Year 4 worked together to create movies that celebrate our school.

The first job was to take quality photos of life around St Albans to use in the movie.

We then had to choose a way of organising these images. After a lot of discussion it was decided to use; our values, an A-Z, the thinking hats and the past, present and future.

We have entered the movies in an eTime competition. The movie with the most views is the winner. So tell your friends and get watching!
