Year 3 and 4 Writers work with Greg O'Connell

Greg O'Connell from the Christchurch School of Young Writers came in to work with a small group of Year 3 and 4 students. This is the first of three workshops. The first session was spent working on an entry to a competition called 'An Ode to Librarians'. Here are some of the entries.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you
endlessly sorting books

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you
rustling among the pinewood shelves
and eternally bleeping barcodes
for anxious customers

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for all
the wonderful books
that you behold to us all

Oh Librarians,
You are magic portals
to fairytale lands
in which dreams come true.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you love, live, and be happy
we love your glow to other people

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you reading wonderful stories
full of adventures with your brains aglow

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for your humour,
fun, and amazingness
you are all beyond compare

Oh Librarians,
You are computers
You are a pick-a-path story
that never ends.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you read marvellous stories
and sort out messy books

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you chat with others
about great books
and help people on computers

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for the great stories
you let us borrow for a week or two
with the kindness in your hearts

Oh Librarians,
You are the four seasons -
there's always
a new season in you.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you work all the live-long day
devoting your time for others and giving
up everything just to help out

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you caring and looking after
all of your visitors
and sharing your advice carefully

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for being there
when we need you
and looking after our wants and needs

Oh Librarians,
You are razzling, rad wizards
making and granting wishes every day
with the touch of your wand
you blow us away.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you put books
on and off the shelves
day in and day out

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you helping others
on finding just the perfect book
for Homo sapiens

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for
giving up your time and energy
for other people and all
the books you possess are amazing

Oh Librarians,
You are cricket -
there is always a higher score to end.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you smile a friendly smile
at us while you put returned books
back on the shelf

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you reading us wonderful
picture books at Storytime
about princesses, dragons, and
who knows what else

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for being there
when we need you
especially when
it comes to scanning our books

Oh Librarians,
You are a magical book -
with no end of amazing stories
and wishes to grant.

who come to your peaceful library

You are a hockey team -
Great at supporting each other.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you tell trembling tales
and rather ridiculous reads

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you flick through the pages
like a silkworm knitting its silk

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for constantly calling me
when my book was overdue -
it still is
but I'll bring it back tomorrow

Oh Librarians,
You are lasers -
that blaze into our imagination.

Oh Librarians,
We watch you
sitting down helping people
with choosing books

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you saying
Sure you can get this book out!

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for helping people
and staying happy
with everybody in the library

Oh Librarians,
You are rivers -
every day a new flow.

By Rory

Oh Librarians,
We watch you organise our books tidily
you scan our books for us
and you're always helping people
find the book for them

Oh Librarians,
We listen to you
Oh! Do you have your library card?
If you do, I can help.
Or can I help you, madam?

Oh Librarians,
We thank you for giving
up your time and effort
just to please your guests
and you are very generous

Oh Librarians,
You are flowers to me -
your pollen really lights up the library.
